Men and Fashion

Men`s fashion has enjoyed an unexpected boom over the last few years, thanks, largely, to the influence of popular male style icons such as David Beckham, Brad Pitt and, erm…Russell Brand. The rise of the word `metrosexual` came hand in hand with the new millennium and referred to that `new` breed of man who cared more about his appearance. Whilst musicians, actors and sports stars continue to drive fashion interests forward, there is a lot to be said for the way in which a particular interest or activity can also influence styles of clothes.

Men`s urban fashion is one that still heavily dominates the high streets, and this should be credited to the surf and skateboarding culture that has travelled across the Atlantic. The warm Californian surfing climate gave rise to a need for comfortable, cool and casual clothing that has gradually become the favoured form of clothing for men who have never been near a surfboard in their life. Likewise, the skateboarding culture captured a need for comfortable footwear and clothing that reflected the eclectic tastes of urban music and has since influenced the many tee-shirts and hooded tops that can be found in the high street today.

Billabong, Animal and Hurley are among those brands that were inspired by the needs and tastes of regular beach goers, acknowledging the ergonomic requirements for lose fitting, tailored and cool clothes, combined with summer friendly colours and easily recognisable logos and designs. Etnies, Bench, Atticus clothing and Fenchurch take their inspiration from other active sports such as skateboarding, BMX and snowboarding. Skateboarding in particular seems to have become more popular in the UK, perhaps given that it is much more easily accessible as a sport but that the styles of clothing are also a bit more in keeping with our colder climate.

Many skating brands allow well-known urban artists to influence the shoes and clothes on offer, Vans employ the inimitable Denni McNett whilst Etnies and Dekline also have artist/designer collaborators. One of the advantages of letting well-known artists take the lead is that there is an equal sense of trend-setting and research into what the customers want. Graffiti artists bridge an obvious gap in capturing a modern sense of style as well as bringing art and fashion together. Etnies has also collaborated with Chester Bennington, of the rock band Linkin Park, which reaffirms that fashion trends frequently takes its inspiration from musical trends.

A quick look through the many new men`s magazines on sale today and you`ll see that there is a greater enthusiasm for men`s fashion than there has ever been before. Getting it right doesn`t necessarily mean having to spend a lot of money, but buying into those fashions that lead the way in combining good design, variety and comfort should be a priority. Most men tend to wear clothes that are too big for them, but wearing the right fit can improve your appearance dramatically, even in those clothes that are considered casual.
